Titeras N'Elias

Beyond Tamrit the track continues beyond the northern camp to the north-east, and soon reaches the edge of the 'stone forest'. This area is probably the most spectacular in the Tassili. Erosion has created narrow 'streets' between the high sandstone pillars, plus a couple of stone arches for variety. At intervals there are 'avenues' crossing the streets, and the perpendicular sandstone walls give the impression of walking in a stone Manhattan.

On the far side of this area are the rock art sites of Titeras N'Elias. This site is like a compressed Saharan rock art course, as in a very compact vicinity there are examples of all the major Tassili art periods. The main shelter has an image of a four horse drawn chariot, while on the far bank of the In Itinen wadi there is a group of paintings from the camel period including an interesting hunting scene. On the nearer side of the wadi, there is a large ghostlike figure from the roundhead period, as well as plenty of bovids.
