The campground at Jabbaren is near a small valley with some cypress trees in a sheltered cove. Jabbaren itself is about 2 km beyond the camp, along the bank of Wadi Amazar, one of the main wadis of the Tassili, draining towards the east. The sandstone here has eroded into conical lumps, with two main 'streets' and many side alleys offering plenty of surface to paint on. Named by Daniken, the 'Great Martian God' from the roundhead period measures 6 metres by 3 metres, and is the largest single painting on the Tassili, occupying the ceiling of a large shelter. There are many scenes from the roundhead and bovidian periods, including a tiny figure of an archer looking over his shoulder with extremely fine detail, almost like a figure on a Greek vase. |
