#1
HEDIN, Sven
Ázsia sivatagjain keresztül
(Accross the Deserts of Asia)
First Edition 1902
Second Edition 191?
Third Edition 191?
The first volume in the series, the account of Sven Hedin's first major expedition to Central Asia in 1893-97, translated and re-worked by Dr. Gusztáv Thirring, with photos and drawings dispersed among text, several plates and two maps. There were at least three editions, the first appearing in the Roman numeral and Picture cover bindings, with the half-titles containing the roman numeral series volume numbers. However a promotion leaflet bound into a Roman Numeral version copy (same was also reported from a Picture Cover variant) lists 8 other titles that have been published (though clearly one, #9 Waddell was only planned, as it eventually came out with a slightly different title) up to 1909. As the original book of Waddell which formed the basis of the Hungarian translation was published in 1905, this particular copy must be of later date (also supported by the Franklin printer's mark on the reverse of the title page, and the lack of "Cs. és Kir." titles). Thus possibly at least some of the early Lóczy titles had two editions with the roman volume numbers still included, with a yet unknown original 1902 one, with the publisher mark probably carrying the "Cs. és kir." royal purveyors title. The second edition is only different in the lack of roman series volume number on the half title, all other details the interiors are identical. It is only known in the Classic I scaled binding, though a corresponding Picture cover version may exist. The single known copy contains the promotion leaflet noted in a Roman Numeral version, they appear to be of the same print run with only the half title changed. The third edition is a totally new layout and printing, though the number of pages and illustrations remain the same. However the pagination is slightly different, also reflected in the table of contents, and almost every page has a different layout. It is known with the Picture cover (full cloth) and Clasic I scaled binding versions. A half-cloth version of the picture cover binding exists, suggesting that the title was re-issued in the early twenties, however the interior is identical in every way to the other third edition variants. Uniquely the Classic I. scaled binding versions of the 2nd and 3rd editions appear to e identical, with similar end papers, both having been bound by Franklin (unlike #6 Hedin which also has two distinct editions in the Classic I. scaled binding).
