The account of Hedin's 1899-1902 fourth Central Asian expedition, in two volumes. It was translated and re-worked by Dr. Gusztáv Thirring, like the earlier Hedin title. The first edition is the first known title to carry a publishing date on the title page, existing in the usual Picture cover and Classic I. roman numeral bindings. The third edition lacks the roman series volume numbers (and the "Cs. és Kir. title from the spine of the Picture cover, there was none in the publisher mark) and pagination very different. The rare second edition is identical in content except for the half titles which are missing the roman volume numbers, and the missing frontspiece from volume II. This Classic I. scaled second etition carries a Leszik K. binder's mark on the rear rather than the usual Franklin, and the endpapers are also different from the Franklin bound Classic I. scaled examples. The third edition also lacks the roman series volume numbers (and the "Cs. és Kir. title from the spine of the Picture cover, there was none in the publisher mark), but also the publishing year is dropped from the title pages, and pagination very different. It appears to have beein in print fairly continuously in the various binding versions from around 1912 till the mid-twenties. This is the first title in the series which clearly had a new edition in the mid-late nineteen-twenties, with Cholnoky listed as series editor on the half-title, but still Lóczi on the cover of the Classic II. variant (one of only two such titles). This fourth edition is very different in many respects: in the earlier ones illustrations are dispersed among the text, resulting in many more pages, while in the second edition illustrations are on plates inserted among text pages. The paper too is different, the early editions being on fine thin coated paper while the latter one is on coarser thick one.
