Sympetrum fonscolombii

Observations:

  • Wadi Abd el Melik (Gilf Kebir), October 2004
  • Karkur Talh (Jebel Uweinat), October 2005
  • Wadi Handal (Jebel Uweinat), October 2005
  • Wadi Hamra (Gilf Kebir), October 2005

While several dragonfly specimens were noted, mostly in the open desert between Dakhla oasis and the Gilf Kebir, most were not photographed and identified. Only a few specimens were photographed in identifiable detail, one of them in the upper eastern branch of the Wadi Abd el Melik, under the only known Balanites aegyptiaca trees in the Libyan Desert. There were at least three male individuals of the same species at the location.

On a subsequent expedition, three female specimens of the species were noted, two at Jebel Uweinat among fresh vegetation, and one in Wadi Hamra, northern Gilf Kebir.
