Anax ephippiger
While several dragonfly specimens were noted, mostly in the open desert between Dakhla oasis and the Gilf Kebir, most were not photographed and identified. Only a few specimens were photographed in identifiable detail. Several individuals of this large migratory species which crosses the Sahara northwards in winter and spring was observed early morning in Northern Karkur Talh, hunting flies in the vicinity of a large acacia. A lucky shot captured one mid-flight. (Species identified by Stefan Ober). It is very likely that the same species was observed flying around our campsite in significant numbers in Wadi Abd el Melik, but no photos could be taken.
