#46
KÉZ Andor (ed.)
Felfedezok lexikona
(Encyclopedia of Explorers)
First Edition 1937
This title is the odd one within the series, being a lexical compilation of explorers' short biographies from both Hungary and around the world (all other titles being travelogues or narrative geoglaphical descriptons of regions). Kéz Andor was the editor, but the indivudual entries were prepared by members of the Department of Geography at Budapest University (including among others Cholnoky and László Kádár). The regular series binding is only known in the Classic IV full cloth variant, however the title is also known in a unique paperback version with printed covers. This latter clearly identifies the title as Volume 51 in the series, the first and only such reference among the Cholnoky edited titles. We do not know if the two versions were contemporary or two separate editions, however the interiors appear to be identical. The paperback is cut to a larger height (width is the same) than the Classic IV cloth-bound volume. The assigning of title number is based on the volume number being 51. Accepting the bibliographical reference to #22 Baktay being volume #25, considering titles that appeared as a double volume in the first edition and excluding second and subsequent editions, title #46 matches Volume 51. (Note, all other 1937 titles are listed in alphabetic order, as their publication order remains unknown.) A covering of the publisher line with a glued paper strip has been noted on some paperback copies, both on the cover, and inside on the half title and title pages. The cause of this is unknown, however it clearly appears to be contemporary. The regular series binding must have had a dust jacket, but it remains unknown.
