SZAVÓJAI, Lajos Amádé
Az "Észak csillaga" I-II.
(Luigi Amadeo di Savoya, "Stella Polare")
First Edition 1904
Second Edition 191?
Third Edition 192?
The account of the 1899-1900 polar expedition which achieved the farthest North of the time, translated by Dr. Móric Darvay (as customary at the time, the name of the author was translated to the Hungarian equivalent). This is the first two-volume set in the series, with separate series volume numbers (IV-V) on the spine in the Roman numerals cover version. There have been at least three separate editions, the first appearing in the Roman numeral and Picture cover bindings, with the half-titles containing the roman numeral series volume numbers. The second edition appeared with the Picture cover and Clasic I scaled binding versions, with the same illustrations but a substantially different pagination. A third edition (in print till at least 1926) appeared after the War, at present only known in the two versions of the plain Classic I. binding (but presumably has a Picture cover version too), which had a different frontspiece than the 1st and 2nd editions in the first volume, and even though the pagination remained the same as the second edition, the text layout differs on a substantial portion of the pages, proving it is a completely new edition and print run. The illustrations are the same in all editions, with 207 photos dispersed among the text, 24 plates, 2 fold-out panoramas and 3 maps. The publisher mark on the first edition carries the "Cs. és Kir. udvari" title (purveyors to the Imperial and Royal courts, a title Lampel held from 1889 onwards), "Cs. és Kir." also appears on the lower spine of the first editon picture cover variant, but not on the second edition.
