ALMÁSY, László
Autóval Szudánba

(With Motorcar to the Sudan)

First Edition 1929
Second Edition 193?
Third Edition 193?

The first book of Almásy to appear in the series, describing the first voyage with an ordinary automobile from Cairo to Khartum accompanied by Prince Antal Eszterházy. The two continued to a hunting expedition up the Dinder river, near the Abessinian border. The book exists in three slightly different versions that are on the borderline of being distinct enough to qualify as separate editions. The first one, which is known in both the Oval logo and Classic III cover variants, contains 83 photo illustrations on separate plates, plus one map at the end, with both number of photos and map noted on title page. The Classic III. version has thicker gilt decoration than the later variants, and the title printed on both the spine and cover has a superfluous "N" (making it "Autóval Szudánban" - "With Motorcar in The Sudan"). The second (termed second edition below, on account of title page) is different only in having no map, and this is reflected on the title page, confirming that these are not simply incomplete copies. There is a third version (third edition below) that only contains 82 photo illustrations, with two that have not been included in the other versions (and three dropped), and the illustration order is also slightly different. However the text pages are exactly the same in all three versions. The last two are only known with Classic III covers (but the Oval logo variety is rare, it cannot be ruled out that all three exist with such cover). The ones with map are the original 1929 first editions, and the other two are probably subsequent editions with minor changes made in the next 1-2 years. All carry Lampel as publisher, so they cannot be later than early 1931 (all post 1931 new editions of original Lampel titles carry Franklin as publisher). The dust jacket is known, in all probability all three versions had the same. The 83 photos version is common, the 82 photos version is more scarce, and the 83 phopos+map version is the rarest, especially with the oval logo binding.
