Musca domestica

Observations:

  • Karkur Talh (Jebel Uweinat), on all visits
  • Karkur Ibrahim (Jebel Uweinat), on all visits
  • Karkur Murr (Jebel Uweinat), on all visits
  • Wadi Wahesh (Jebel Uweinat), on all visits
  • Jebel Arkenu, October 2003
  • Wadi Abd el Melik (Gilf Kebir), on all visits
  • Wadi Hamra (Gilf Kebir), October 2005

Flies are abundant in all the valleys with vegetation, both in the Gilf Kebir and at Jebels Arkenu and Uweinat. In Karkur Talh they are can be irritatingly numerous, and on one occasion at Jebel Arkenu in October 2003 their numbers were extraordinary. There are most probably numerous species, these house flies photographed in Karkur Talh in March 2007 are typical ones (about 8 mm). Musca species show sexual dimorphism, males have closely set larger eyes, females have eyes more apart. On the photos both males and felames may be observed (however there is a possibility that the larger-eyed individuals are a separate species).
