BAKTAY, Ervin
A világ tetején

(On the Top of the World)

First Edition 1930
Second Edition ?
Third Edition 1931
Fourth Edition 1943

1930 saw the release of five titles, we do not have any informaton on their true order, so the title numbering follows alphabetical order. This is the first book of the orientalist Ervin Baktay to appear in the series, describing his travels in the footsteps of Körösi Csoma Sándor to Ladakh and Tibet. (One bibliographical source mentions this title to be volume XXV in the series, considering the two double numbers and the XIII-XIV joint number, the number is just right for the first edition.) The title was popular, reaching four editions, however there is some uncertainty surrounding these. The first edition definitely appeared in 1930 in a single volume, both with the Oval logo and Classical III. cover versions, containing one hundred illustrations and two maps. At present we do not know of any different second edition, however a two volume edition that was still published by Lampel, so could not have been issued later than 1931, was explicitely labelled Third Edition on the title page (the first and only such reference in the entire series). Possibly a second single volume edition appeared in 1930 or 1931 without the maps and/or different number of illustrations, as was the case with several other titles in the period. A fourth edition was prepared again in a single volume in 1943, identical to the previous editions except for a short postscript prepared for this edition. Interestingly the contents page is the same as for the two volume third edition, listing two separate volumes. Uniquely on the title page the reccommended price appears. This last edition appeared in the Classic IV. half-cloth binding, plus in a unique undecorated red half-cloth binding with only the author and title on the spine, and the initials of the society on the front cover. This latter variant was only used for this title (another rare Baktay title, #55 had two closely resembling but not identical binding variants). The dust jacket of the fourth edition is known, listing three of the last released titles in the MFTK series, and also a number of other titles in another Franklin travelogue series (Utazások - kalandok, Voyages and adventures). It is unknown at present if the earlier editions had the same dust jacket cover design, however the rear and rear leaf must have been different.
